Accident prevention
- Risk assess annually or more if the risk warrants it
- Make use of the help on the HSE website when identifying risk
- Put in to practise the measures identified in your risk assessments
- Put in place systems to ensure the safety of visitors and employees to your premises
- Make sure those systems are adhered to, and that you can prove this
Claims containment
- Conduct a proper post accident enquiry
- Be aware that post accident investigative documentation may be disclosable; it should record facts and findings but not opinion
- Obtaining name and contact details of witnesses at the time can save a lot of time
- Retain original relevant documentation including risk assessments for at least 3 years
- Ensure the correct post accident documentation is completed including a RIDDOR notification if appropriate
- Notify your insurers even if you do not anticipate a claim
- Check whether your insurers have an accident hot line which may give you instant access to advice
- Get legal representation from someone who has the correct expertise
